Boat Detailing Cost and Prices in Seattle

Boat detailing prices can be all over the place depending on the location, what each service includes and many other factors. It can be difficult to compare boat detailing costs across the board since boat detailing companies most likely price their services differently. So how does a boat owner know if they're paying a fair price for boat detailing? We'll walk you through how to make sure you're not paying too much or too little (you get what you pay for) when it comes to choosing boat detailing services.

As far as rates and prices go, there are really no set prices in the detailing industry. You can negotiate, but don’t think this is a service you can get at a rock bottom rate. A good detailer will be spending a lot of time, physical exertion and quality products on your boat and that is worth paying for if you can’t or don’t want to do it yourself.

Some boat detailing services are priced by the hour and some are priced by the foot. For those services priced by the foot, you’ll know exactly what the total cost is going to be up front. For services priced by the hour, you should ask the company to give you an estimate of how many hours they think the job will take and to please let you know ahead of time if they expect to exceed those hours. If they do exceed the original hours, ask them to give you an updated estimate and explain why it’s taking longer. They may have run into a few problem areas you should know about or they may have underestimated the job when they first gave you the quote.

If they severely underestimated the job, you might question them as to why they didn’t fully realize the scope of the project in the beginning. For example, if you hired a detailer to wax and buff your heavily oxidized boat and they gave you a “sounds too good to be true” quote, then they either low-balled the quote to beat out any other bids or they may not have enough experience to know that heavy oxidation often requires a two-step process, which takes longer, uses more product and requires a skilled hand at buffing.

In trying to negotiate a fair price or a price that fits your budget, consider two things. 1) Try to do some of the work yourself and 2) decide what’s most important to you. For example, you might be able to save a few dollars if you wash the boat yourself so that the detailer only has to wax and buff it. Or, if you feel you have the time and energy to wax and buff the topside (usually the easier part of the boat to reach and work on), then only hire them to wax and buff the hull.

In regard to what is most important to you, is your end goal a well-protected boat or a cosmetically perfect finish? In the case of having your boat waxed, if you’re mostly concerned with simply protecting your gel coat with a good layer of wax, then a one-step wax process is all you need. If you are determined to bring back that showroom shine again and your gel coat is heavily oxidized, it will require a two-step wax process, which is often double the rate of a one-step process.

Finally, ask the detailer if they include any additional charges in their rate. All detailers must charge sales tax because their services are considered “retail sales”. However, some might also charge for supplies, special equipment or gear specifically used for your boat, mileage, or other transportation and labor fees. Make sure you're aware of any additional surcharges before they start the work.

Deckhand Detailing is very transparent with their pricing. We always want to make sure the customer knows what the service will cost, or if priced by the hour, has a range that it won't exceed. How to Remove Oxidation from Your Boat’s Gel Coat: The Complete Guide for Seattle Boat Owners

10/6/2025

If your boat’s once-glossy finish has dulled to a chalky, faded surface, oxidation is the culprit. Gel coat oxidation happens naturally over time as UV rays, salt, and moisture attack the surface, breaking down the protective layer that keeps your boat looking bright and new. Fortunately, with the right products, techniques, and a bit of elbow grease (or a good buffer), you can restore that deep shine again.

Whether you’re in Seattle, the Pacific Northwest, or anywhere along the coast, this guide will walk you through the levels of oxidation, the methods for removing oxidation, and the tools and products you’ll need to get your gel coat gleaming again.

Understanding Gel Coat Oxidation
Your boat’s gel coat is a durable resin layer that protects the fiberglass beneath it. Over time, exposure to sunlight, salt, pollution, and air causes that surface to oxidize essentially, it dries out and loses its glossy protective finish. This not only makes your boat look dull but also leaves the gel coat vulnerable to further UV and water damage.

Oxidation doesn’t happen all at once. It progresses gradually, from a light haze to a heavy chalky layer that can even pit the surface. Recognizing which level your boat is at will determine which products and techniques you’ll need.

The Five Levels of Oxidation
Drawing from The Insider’s Guide to Boat Cleaning and Detailing, here’s how to determine your boat’s oxidation level and what that means for restoration:
1. Glossy (No Oxidation)
Your gel coat is smooth and shiny. This is the ideal condition of a new boat or one that’s been well maintained under cover. You can maintain it with a soft wax or pure polish.
2. Sheen (Light Oxidation)
The surface still has a slight gloss but is beginning to dull in spots, especially on sun-exposed areas like the brow and foredeck. This requires a mild cleaner wax or one-step polish.
3. Faded (Medium Oxidation)
Your boat has lost its gloss and looks matte. It’s not yet chalky, but the shine is gone. You’ll need a thicker cleaner wax and a power buffer to restore the gloss.
4. Chalky (Heavy Oxidation)
You can feel the oxidation or a chalky residue comes off on your fingers, and colored hulls look hazy.
5. Chalky and Pitted (Severe Oxidation)
The gel coat is extremely oxidized, thin, and possibly pitted. You may even see the fiberglass pattern underneath. Heavy compounding or even light wet sanding will be necessary before waxing to restore the surface.

Step-by-Step: How to Remove Oxidation from a Boat
Oxidation removal isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. The steps and products depend on how bad the oxidation is.
Step 1: Wash and Inspect
Always begin with a thorough wash using a quality marine soap like Deckhand Detailing’s Deep Cleaning Wash Away Soap. This removes salt spray and dirt that could interfere with your polishing or compounding. Dry the boat completely before inspecting the surface in good light.

Step 2: Determine the Level of Oxidation
Examine both the hull and topside separately. The topside usually oxidizes faster since it gets more sunlight. Compare the appearance to the five levels above. Once you know the level, you can choose the right approach and products.

Step 3: Light Oxidation (Level 2)
For a boat with a bit of fading but no chalkiness:
  • Use a cleaner wax or one-step polish, such as Deckhand Detailing's One-Step Polish.
  • Apply with a buffer using a wool compounding or polishing pad at low speed.
  • If you're using a wax-based product, let it dry to a haze. If you're using a polish (no wax), then work with it wet - do not let it dry to a haze. Buff it off at a higher speed.
This process removes light oxidation and restores gloss while leaving a layer of UV protection.

Step 4: Medium Oxidation (Level 3)
When the surface is matte with no shine:
  • Use a stronger cleaner wax, such as 3M Cleaner Wax.
  • Apply small sections at a time, working in the shade when possible.
  • Buff the wax in while still slightly wet using a variable-speed buffer set to medium (around 2,000–2,400 RPM).
  • Follow up with a microfiber towel to remove any wax dust.
If one product doesn’t deliver the gloss you’re after, try mixing your own cleaner wax: combine Meguiar’s One-Step Compound (#67), 3M Cleaner Wax, and Meguiar’s Flagship Premium Wax to customize the level of cutting power.

Step 5: Heavy Oxidation (Level 4)
Once your gel coat feels chalky or shows a white haze on colored areas, a two-step compounding and waxing process is required.
First Step: Compounding
  • Start with a rubbing compound such as 3M Perfect-It or 3M Heavy Cut Rubbing Compound.
  • Use a wool compounding pad on a variable-speed buffer (DeWalt 849x is a professional favorite).
  • Work in small areas, keeping the pad flat to prevent swirl marks.
  • Buff the compound in and off while still wet to avoid gumming.
  • Use a spur to clean the pad frequently.
Second Step: Waxing or Polishing
Once the oxidation layer is gone, seal the surface with a marine wax or long-lasting polish, such as Deckhand Detailing's Pure Polish, which provides long-term UV protection and a deep, lasting shine.

Step 6: Severe Oxidation (Level 5)
When the gel coat is chalky, pitted, or extremely thin, your goal shifts from “restoration” to “preservation.”
  • Begin with the same compounding process as above, but be gentle and avoid pressing hard on the buffer to prevent burning through the gel coat.
  • If compounding alone doesn’t cut through the oxidation, you may need to wet sand using 1,000–1,500-grit sandpaper.
  • Always wet the area thoroughly and sand lightly until you reach clean gel coat, then re-compound and polish.
Wet sanding should only be done if you’re confident or have experience. Over-sanding can permanently damage the surface. Many Seattle-area boat owners prefer hiring professional mobile boat detailers for this step.

Choosing the Right Products for Oxidation Removal
Here’s a simplified guide from our book’s recommendations and current industry standards:
  • Light Oxidation:
Meguiar’s Cleaner Wax, Deckhand Detailing One-Step Polish
  • Medium Oxidation:
    3M Cleaner Wax, 3M Perfect-It Compound, Meguiar’s One-Step Compound
  • Heavy Oxidation:
3M Super Duty Rubbing Compound, followed by Deckhand Detailing Pure Polish
  • Severe Oxidation:
Light wet sanding, then 3M Heavy Cut Compound + Meguiar’s Premium Flagship Wax
These professional-grade products are designed for gel coat restoration and UV protection, ensuring a long-lasting shine even in the mild Seattle climate.

Essential Equipment for Removing Oxidation
Your results depend just as much on your equipment as your products. Based on recommendations from The Insider’s Guide:
  • Variable-Speed Buffer: DeWalt 849x is a professional favorites.
  • Pads:
    • Wool Compounding Pad for cutting oxidation.
    • Wool Polishing Pad or Foam Pad for finishing.
  • Spur Tool: Keeps wool pads clean while you work.
  • Microfiber Rags: For final hand buffing.
  • Squeeze Bottles: Easier product application.
  • Face Mask: Protects from wax dust when buffing.
  • Extension Cord & Shore Power Adapter: Always use dock power — never plug a buffer into your boat’s AC outlet.

Preventing Future Oxidation
Once you’ve restored your gel coat, protect your investment with a consistent maintenance schedule:
  • For boats stored uncovered in sun and saltwater: Wax topside every 3–6 months and the hull every 6–9 months.
  • For boats in the Pacific Northwest: Wax the entire boat in spring and the topside again in fall.
  • For boats in covered slips: Once every 12 months may suffice.
Regular washing, using UV-protective products, and keeping a smaller boat covered when not in use can dramatically reduce oxidation.

Pro Tips for the Best Results
  • Always work in the shade or on cool surfaces to prevent products from drying too quickly.
  • Don’t let compounds or polishes dry. Work them while wet. Wax, on the other hand, can dry to a haze before buffing off.
  • Keep your buffing pad flat on the surface to avoid swirls.
  • If the gel coat is dry and absorbs product instantly, add a more oily compound like Meguiar’s One-Step Compound to re-hydrate the surface.
  • Always do a test spot to determine which product mix works best for your specific gel coat and oxidation level.

Gel Coat Restoration: How to Bring Back the Shine on Your Boat
Owning a boat is one of life’s greatest pleasures—whether you’re cruising Lake Washington, fishing out in Puget Sound, or enjoying weekends at your favorite Seattle marina. But over time, every boat owner runs into the same issue: the once-brilliant gel coat finish begins to fade, chalk, or lose its luster. This is a natural process caused by oxidation, sun exposure, water, and general wear. Fortunately, gel coat restoration can breathe new life into your vessel and bring back that glossy, like-new shine.

In this article, we’ll cover what gel coat is, why it fades, and the different restoration methods available—from buffing and compounding to wet sanding and even re-painting. We’ll also share some tips from professional boat detailing experts here in Seattle who specialize in keeping boats looking their best year-round.

What Is Gel Coat and Why Does It Fade?
The gel coat is a protective, pigmented resin layer applied to the outer surface of fiberglass boats. It’s what gives your boat its color and glossy finish. Unlike automotive paint, gel coat isn’t just cosmetic—it provides an additional barrier against water intrusion and environmental wear.

However, gel coat is porous and vulnerable to UV rays, salt, and pollution. Without regular care, it oxidizes. That’s when you see chalky, faded, or blotchy areas where the surface has become rough and dull. Left untreated, oxidation can eat deeper into the gel coat, making restoration more challenging.

Three Main Ways to Restore Gel Coat
1. Buffing and Compounding
For light to moderate oxidation, buffing with a polishing compound is the most effective and least invasive solution. A professional-grade buffer and the right cutting compounds can smooth the surface, removing the chalky oxidation and restoring shine.
  • How it works: A rotary buffer with a foam or wool pad is used along with compound to “cut” into the gel coat just enough to remove the oxidized layer.
  • Best for: Boats with mild oxidation, dullness, or minor scratches.
  • Follow-up: After compounding, the boat must be sealed with boat waxing or a polymer/ceramic coating to protect the fresh surface.

2. Wet Sanding
If your boat’s oxidation is severe, wet sanding may be necessary before compounding. Wet sanding is exactly what it sounds like: sanding the gel coat with fine-grit sandpaper and water to smooth out deep oxidation, scratches, and stains.
  • How it works: Sandpaper (often starting with 600–1000 grit and moving up to finer grits like 2000) is used carefully by hand or with a dual-action sander. Water helps lubricate the process, preventing deep scratches.
  • Best for: Boats with heavy oxidation, deep chalkiness, or uneven color patches.
  • Follow-up: After sanding, the boat must be compounded, polished, and waxed to restore gloss.
Wet sanding is an advanced skill—done incorrectly, it can damage the gel coat. This is why many Seattle-area boaters hire a professional boat detailing service for this step.

3. Re-Painting or Re-Gel Coating
Sometimes, gel coat is simply too far gone to restore with sanding or buffing. In this case, re-painting or re-gel coating may be the only solution.
  • Re-gel coating: A new layer of gel coat is sprayed onto the boat, essentially giving it a new skin.
  • Painting: Many boat owners choose marine-grade paint instead, which offers excellent protection and a wide choice of colors.
This option is more expensive and time-consuming but can completely transform an older boat. It’s a good choice if you want a fresh look or if the existing gel coat has become thin, pitted, or damaged.

Step-by-Step Gel Coat Restoration Process
For most boat owners dealing with moderate oxidation, the restoration process typically follows this sequence:
  1. Wash and Decontaminate – Start with a deep clean using a dedicated boat soap to remove dirt, salt, and grime.
  2. Assess Oxidation – Light chalkiness? Go straight to compounding. Heavy oxidation? Prepare for wet sanding.
  3. Wet Sand if Needed – Sand problem areas with progressively finer grits.
  4. Compound – Use a rotary buffer and compound to cut into the gel coat and bring out clarity.
  5. Polish – A finer polish refines the surface and adds depth of shine.
  6. Protect – Seal the finish with a high-quality boat wax, polymer sealant, or ceramic coating.

Protecting Your Gel Coat After Restoration
Restoring your boat is only half the job--maintaining it is just as important. Here are key steps to keep that shine lasting as long as possible:
  • Regular Washing – Use a pH-balanced boat soap (avoid dish detergents that strip wax).
  • Seasonal Waxing – Apply boat wax at least twice a year (spring and fall in Seattle) or upgrade to a ceramic coating for long-term protection.
  • UV Protection – Use covers or store indoors when possible to minimize sun exposure.
  • Professional Detailing – Schedule annual or biannual professional boat detailing services for deep maintenance.

DIY vs. Professional Gel Coat Restoration
Some boat owners enjoy tackling restoration projects themselves. With the right tools—buffers, compounds, sanding pads—it’s possible to achieve solid results. However, DIY work requires patience, technique, and experience. Mistakes like burning the gel coat with a buffer or sanding too deep can be costly.

For many, hiring a professional Seattle boat detailing service is worth the investment. Professionals have the equipment, experience, and product knowledge to achieve the best finish safely and efficiently.

Why Gel Coat Restoration Is Worth It
  • Resale Value – A glossy, well-maintained boat is far more attractive to buyers.
  • Longevity – Protects the fiberglass underneath and extends the life of your boat.
  • Aesthetics – Let’s face it: nothing beats pulling up to the dock in a gleaming, like-new vessel.
  • Pride of Ownership – You’ll simply enjoy your time on the water more when your boat looks great.

Gel Coat Restoration in Seattle
Seattle boat owners face unique challenges:
  • Rain and Moisture – Constant wet weather promotes mildew and water spots.
  • Saltwater Exposure – Boaters who use Puget Sound must battle salt’s corrosive effects.
  • Seasonal Storage – Boats stored outdoors all winter are more prone to oxidation.
Because of these conditions, Seattle boat detailing companies often recommend more frequent waxing or ceramic coatings to stand up to the Pacific Northwest climate.

Final Thoughts
Whether your boat is lightly oxidized or heavily faded, there’s a gel coat restoration method that can bring it back to life. From buffing and compounding to wet sanding or even re-painting, the right approach depends on your boat’s condition and your budget.
The key is to not wait until oxidation gets too severe.

With routine boat waxing and detailing, Seattle boat owners can keep their gel coat looking beautiful for years to come. And if your boat is already chalky or dull, don’t worry—with the right care, it can shine like new again.

Dive into our guide and discover the secrets to maintaining your boat’s beauty and longevity!

What is Mobile Boat Detailing?
Mobile boat detailing is a specialized service that brings professional boat cleaning and maintenance directly to your location. Unlike traditional boat detailing, where you might need to transport your vessel to a service center, mobile detailing professionals come equipped with everything they need to perform a comprehensive cleaning and restoration job right at your dock, marina, or even on a trailer at your home. This convenience factor alone makes mobile boat detailing an attractive option for boat owners who want to maintain their vessel’s appearance without the added hassle of relocation.

Mobile detailing encompasses an array of services designed to keep your boat in impeccable condition. These services include exterior washing, interior cleaning, polishing, waxing, and protective coatings. Each service is tailored to meet the specific needs of your boat, ensuring that every inch of your vessel is attended to with the utmost care and precision. By utilizing specialized tools and eco-friendly cleaning products, mobile detailing professionals can achieve results that often surpass what you might accomplish on your own.

The rise in popularity of mobile boat detailing can be attributed to the growing demand for convenience and high-quality service. Boat owners are increasingly recognizing the value of having a professional detailer who can address their boat's needs on-site, saving them valuable time and effort. Whether you’re preparing for a boating season, looking to sell your boat, or simply want to keep it in top-notch condition, mobile boat detailing provides a flexible and efficient solution.

Benefits of Choosing Mobile Boat Detailing Services
One of the primary benefits of mobile boat detailing is the convenience it offers. With a busy schedule, the last thing you want is to spend hours transporting your boat to and from a detailing service. Mobile detailing eliminates this hassle by bringing the service to you, allowing you to continue with your day-to-day activities while your boat receives professional care. This on-site service is particularly advantageous for larger boats that are more difficult to transport.

In addition to convenience, mobile boat detailing services are known for their thoroughness and attention to detail. Professional detailers are trained to handle all aspects of boat maintenance, from cleaning and polishing to minor repairs and protective treatments. They use specialized equipment and high-quality products that are specifically designed for marine environments, ensuring that your boat receives the best possible care. This level of expertise can be difficult to achieve with DIY methods, making professional mobile detailing a worthwhile investment.

Another significant benefit of mobile boat detailing is the preservation of your boat's value. Regular detailing helps to protect your boat from the harsh effects of the marine environment, including saltwater, UV rays, and algae growth. By maintaining the appearance and condition of your boat, you can prevent long-term damage and reduce the need for costly repairs. This not only extends the lifespan of your vessel but also enhances its resale value, should you decide to sell it in the future.

Essential Mobile Boat Detailing Services Offered
Mobile boat detailing services encompass a wide range of offerings designed to address every aspect of boat maintenance. One of the most common services is exterior washing, which involves cleaning the hull, deck, and other exterior surfaces to remove dirt, grime, and salt buildup. This process often includes the use of pressure washers and specialized cleaning agents that are safe for marine environments. A thorough exterior wash not only improves the appearance of your boat but also helps to prevent the buildup of harmful substances that can cause long-term damage.

Another essential service is interior cleaning, which focuses on the boat's cabin, upholstery, and other interior surfaces. This can include vacuuming, steam cleaning, and sanitizing to remove dirt, stains, and odors. Detailers may also treat and protect upholstered surfaces to prevent fading and wear. A clean and well-maintained interior not only enhances the comfort of your boat but also contributes to a more enjoyable boating experience.

Polishing and waxing are also crucial components of mobile boat detailing. Polishing helps to remove oxidation, scratches, and other imperfections from the boat's surface, restoring its shine and smoothness. Waxing provides a protective layer that shields the boat from UV rays, saltwater, and other environmental factors. This protective coating can significantly extend the life of your boat's finish, keeping it looking new for longer. In addition to these services, many mobile detailers offer specialized treatments such as teak restoration, metal polishing, and gel coat repair to address specific needs and ensure comprehensive care.

How to Choose the Right Mobile Boat Detailing Company
Selecting the right mobile boat detailing company is crucial to ensuring that your boat receives the best possible care. One of the first things to consider is the company’s reputation. Look for reviews and testimonials from other boat owners to get a sense of the quality of service they provide. A company with a strong reputation for excellence and customer satisfaction is more likely to deliver the results you’re looking for. Additionally, ask for references and check their credentials to confirm their experience and expertise in boat detailing.

Another important factor to consider is the range of services offered by the detailing company. Ensure that they provide the specific services you need, whether it’s exterior washing, interior cleaning, polishing, or protective coatings. Some companies may also offer additional services such as minor repairs, restoration, and maintenance packages. A company that offers a comprehensive range of services can be more convenient and cost-effective, as you won’t need to hire multiple providers for different tasks.

It’s also essential to inquire about the products and tools used by the detailing company. High-quality, marine-specific products are crucial for effective and safe boat detailing. Ask about the types of cleaning agents, polishes, and protective coatings they use, and ensure that they adhere to eco-friendly practices. Additionally, check if they have the necessary equipment to handle your boat’s size and type. Finally, consider the company’s pricing and availability. Obtain quotes from multiple providers to compare prices and ensure you’re getting a fair deal. Ensure that the company can accommodate your schedule and provide timely service, especially during peak boating seasons.

Cost Factors of Mobile Boat Detailing Services
The cost of mobile boat detailing services can vary widely based on several factors. One of the primary factors is the size and type of your boat. Larger boats require more time and effort to detail, resulting in higher costs. Similarly, boats with complex designs or extensive features may require specialized services, which can also increase the overall price. It’s important to provide detailed information about your boat to the detailing company to receive an accurate estimate.

The specific services you require will also impact the cost of mobile boat detailing. Basic services such as exterior washing and interior cleaning are typically less expensive than more advanced treatments like polishing, waxing, and gel coat repair. Additionally, if your boat requires specialized treatments such as teak restoration or metal polishing, these services may come at an additional cost. It’s essential to discuss your needs with the detailing company to ensure you receive a tailored service package that fits your budget.

Another cost factor to consider is the frequency of detailing. Regular maintenance can help to keep your boat in top condition and prevent the need for extensive cleaning and repairs. Many detailing companies offer maintenance packages that provide regular services at a discounted rate. While this may result in a higher upfront cost, it can save you money in the long run by reducing the need for major detailing work. Additionally, regular detailing can help to preserve your boat’s value and extend its lifespan, making it a worthwhile investment.

DIY vs. Professional Mobile Boat Detailing
When it comes to boat detailing, many boat owners face the decision between DIY methods and hiring a professional mobile detailing service. While DIY detailing can be a cost-effective option, it requires a significant amount of time, effort, and expertise. Cleaning and maintaining a boat involves more than just scrubbing surfaces; it requires knowledge of the proper techniques, tools, and products to use. Without this expertise, you risk causing damage to your boat or achieving subpar results.

Professional mobile boat detailing services, on the other hand, offer several advantages. Detailers are trained and experienced in all aspects of boat maintenance, ensuring that every part of your boat receives the care it needs. They use high-quality, marine-specific products and specialized equipment to achieve superior results. Additionally, professional detailers can identify and address any issues or damage that may not be immediately apparent to the untrained eye. This proactive approach can help to prevent more significant problems down the line.

While professional detailing services come at a cost, many boat owners find that the benefits outweigh the expense. The convenience of having a detailer come to your location, the expertise and thoroughness of the service, and the long-term preservation of your boat’s value make professional detailing a worthwhile investment. Ultimately, the decision between DIY and professional detailing depends on your budget, available time, and level of expertise. For many boat owners, the peace of mind and superior results provided by professional mobile detailing are well worth the investment.

Preparing Your Boat for Mobile Detailing
Proper preparation is essential to ensure that your boat detailing service goes smoothly and efficiently. One of the first steps is to remove any personal items and loose belongings from your boat. This includes items such as clothing, electronics, and other personal effects. Clearing the space allows the detailers to work more effectively and ensures that your belongings are not damaged or misplaced during the cleaning process.

Next, it’s important to secure any loose or delicate items that cannot be removed. This may include securing hatches, windows, and other movable parts. If your boat has any specific areas that require special attention or caution, be sure to inform the detailing company in advance.

Providing clear instructions on how to handle these areas can help to prevent accidental damage and ensure that your boat receives the best possible care.
Finally, ensure that the detailers have easy access to your boat. This may involve coordinating with your marina or dock to provide access and ensure that there is sufficient space for the detailers to work. If your boat is on a trailer, make sure it is positioned in a convenient location with access to water and power if needed. By taking these steps to prepare your boat, you can help to facilitate a smooth and efficient detailing process, allowing the professionals to focus on delivering superior results.

Eco-Friendly Practices in Mobile Boat Detailing
As environmental concerns continue to grow, many mobile boat detailing companies are adopting eco-friendly practices to minimize their impact on the environment. One of the key ways they achieve this is by using biodegradable and non-toxic cleaning products. Traditional cleaning agents can contain harmful chemicals that can pollute waterways and harm marine life. By opting for eco-friendly products, detailers can effectively clean and maintain boats without compromising the health of the environment.

Water conservation is another important aspect of eco-friendly boat detailing. Many detailing companies use water-saving techniques such as pressure washing and water reclamation systems to reduce water usage and prevent runoff. Pressure washing allows for efficient cleaning with less water, while water reclamation systems capture and recycle water used during the detailing process. These practices help to conserve valuable water resources and reduce the environmental impact of boat detailing.

Eco-friendly detailing companies also prioritize proper waste disposal and recycling. This includes responsibly disposing of any waste generated during the detailing process, such as used cleaning products, cloths, and packaging. Some companies also offer recycling services for materials such as plastic, metal, and glass. By adhering to these environmentally responsible practices, mobile boat detailing companies can help to protect our waterways and marine ecosystems while providing high-quality service to boat owners.

It’s best to discuss the estimated time frame with your detailing company to ensure you have a clear understanding of the process.
Can mobile boat detailing services address minor repairs?
Yes, many mobile boat detailing companies offer minor repair services in addition to their standard detailing offerings. This can include fixing scratches, repairing gel coat damage, and addressing minor upholstery issues. Be sure to inquire about the specific repair services offered by your detailing company and any additional costs associated with these services.
Are eco-friendly detailing products as effective as traditional products?
Eco-friendly detailing products are formulated to provide effective cleaning and protection while minimizing environmental impact. Many eco-friendly products are just as effective, if not more so, than traditional products. They are designed to be safe for marine environments and can deliver excellent results without the use of harmful chemicals.

Q: What's the difference between a detailed exterior boat wash and a recurring maintenance boat wash?

Detailed Exterior Boat Wash
A detailed wash is a very thorough wash where the detailers makes sure they touch every inch of the boat. This includes washing the whole boat, lifting up hatches or opening storage compartments to clean around the track and edges, cleaning canvas and cleaning plastic windows. The customer is usually billed by the hour for this service, and it can often take several hours or even a full day depending on the condition and size of the boat. This is usually requested on a boat that hasn't been washed in a long time. This service may also include cleaning the dinghy, cleaning canvas enclosures and cleaning and polishing plastic window panels. Always ask the detailer what the detailed wash includes so you know what work will be done.

Recurring Maintenance Boat Washes
A recurring maintenance wash is done on a boat that has already been thoroughly cleaned in the past and shouldn't be too dirty if it's getting washed every few weeks year-round. A recurring maintenance wash will keep the boat looking clean so it's ready to go anytime the owner wants to use it. This type of wash usually includes washing the exterior of the boat from waterline up, scrubbing non-skid, cleaning around hatches and wiping down in the cockpit or helm station area. This type of wash doesn't normally include extras such as canvas cleaning, dinghy cleaning or plastic window polishing, as those tasks take longer and are saved for more detailed washes.

Q: How much does it cost to get my boat detailed in Seattle?

6/10/2025

That's a great question and you'll find that the answer varies a lot depending on which company you're contacting.

Getting Quotes
When trying to find out boat detailing prices for your area, the first thing you'll need to do is contact several boat detailing companies to get quotes. This can be a difficult challenge because a lot of the one-person or super small boat detailing businesses don't have anyone answering phones or replying to emails for them and it often takes them a long time to get back to inquiries, if you hear back from them at all.

At Deckhand Detailing, we respond to emails, estimate requests and phone calls within minutes. We pride ourselves on great customer communication because our customers are the heart of our business!

Some boat detailing companies won't give you a quote until they see your boat first. This method will give you a more defined quote, but it might take them several weeks before they have time to go look at your boat. They won't be able to schedule the work until after they've seen your boat, so if you need it done sooner than later, this may not work out very well for your schedule.

Deckhand Detailing does it differently. Our buff and wax jobs use a range of prices based on the condition and size of a boat. Boat owners know the condition and size of their boat, so with our price ranges, they're able to know what they're going to be charged for when requesting a buff and wax detail job. By giving a range, we're able to get new customers on our schedule without having to go look at each and every boat. We always do test spots anyway, so if we detect that the boat is going to take longer or require more compounding than expected, we always reach out to let the customer know.

The Going Rate
There is no "going rate" for boat detailing. It's a very specialized service and every company does it a little different than others, meaning you'll need to ask what each boat detailing company what their rates include.

Some companies charge by the hour and others charge by the foot for their buff and wax detail jobs. Deckhand Detailing charges by the foot for that service because we want our customers to know ahead of time exactly how much it's going to cost, with no surprises at the end. It doesn't matter how long it takes us to do the job because the rate for the customer won't change. This is the best way to price a large buff and wax service if you truly want to be fair to the customer.

If a company charges for their buff and wax job by the hour, try to get an estimated range of how long they think it will take and require them to let you know if they think it's going to take longer at any time during the job.

Find Out What's Included in the Quote
Our pricing structure lets customers know exactly what's included in the quote, but other companies don't often let you know upfront what added fees or costs might be attached to your invoice. Always ask if there are any additional fees or costs that might get added to the invoice. This could include adding supply costs (ask if supplies are included in their quote), drive time costs or fees, parking fees, equipment set up and take down costs, overtime costs or surcharge or invoice fees.

Comparing Quotes
Boat detailing rates can be all over the place! There are several reasons for this. If you get a quote from a new detailed who's just starting out vs a quote from a large company that's been in business for a long time, there could be a several thousand dollar different! That's because the single detailer is desperate for business and doesn't have to pay the overhead that a larger company has to pay. The single detailer may also not be paying taxes or have liability insurance. A rate of $500 vs $2,000 might sound great, but remember that you get what you pay for.

If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. If you get a quote from a detailer for $500 and you get a quote from another detailing company for $2000, you will definitely want to ask both companies what their quote includes and make sure that there aren't any extra fees that will be passed along to you in the end. You also want to make sure they have full coverage liability insurance because if something goes wrong and they're not able to cover it, you'll be stuck with the repair bill.

If you get two wildly different quotes, you may want to question the lowest quote because that person may not actually realize all of the work that goes into detailing a boat. This could be their first job or they may be new to detailing and think they can do it because they've detailed cars before, but that doesn't mean they know how to detail boats.

Location Matters
If you live in Fort Lauderdale or Miami and keep your boat at one of the large marinas there, you're going to pay a lot more for boat detailing than you will in a small town that only has one lake to boat on. Rates will vary all over the country because location creates demand, which results in higher detailing rates.

Our Advice
We can't give you specific rates for what detailers charge because there are so many factors to take into consideration. However, we can tell you that sticking with a larger company that is well established, has liability insurance and specializes in detailing boats (rather than cars and airplanes) is going to be the better company to go with. Their prices will be competitive and they should have very skilled workers who will do a good job (and hopefully an excellent job!) and take good care of your boat. Q: What’s Typically Included in a Full Boat Detailing Package?

6/10/2025

Why Boat Detailing Is So Important
Routine boat detailing is one of the most important maintenance practices for protecting your boat from the elements. Salt, sun, dirt, mildew, and oxidation can quickly turn a beautiful boat into a dull, damaged one. A full boat detailing service helps maintain your boat’s appearance, extends the life of its materials and finishes, and supports higher resale value.

While each marine detailing company may offer slightly different packages, most professional boat detailing services include:

1. Complete Exterior Wash
  • Non-skid deck scrub
  • Thorough washing of hull and topsides to remove salt, dirt, dust, bird droppings and mildew
  • Window cleaning or washing
  • Cleaning hatch gutter tracks and edges
This step removes surface grime before deeper cleaning and waxing begins.

2. Gel Coat Waxing and Polishing
A proper waxing and polishing process preserves the gel coat, helps prevent oxidation, and restores shine. Most quotes are usually based on the level of oxidation and the size of the boat. Regular waxing is especially critical for boats that are always in direct sunlight or saltwater.

3. Interior Boat Cleaning
Interior detailing includes:
  • Vacuuming and surface wiping
  • Cleaning vinyl seating and helm stations
  • Disinfecting heads and galleys
  • Polishing wood paneling and cabinetry
For premium boat detailing packages, this may also include headliner cleaning, air freshening and carpet spot removal.

4. Teak Deck Maintenance
If your boat has teak decks:
  • Teak is cleaned and brightened
  • Oil or protective sealants may be applied if requested

5. Stainless and Metal Polishing
  • Rust and salt removal
  • Polishing of railings, cleats, and stanchions
  • Protectant application to prevent corrosion

6. Vinyl and Canvas Cleaning
  • Cleaning of vinyl windows (e.g., Isinglass, Strataglass)
  • Application of plastic-safe polish (like Plexus)
  • Mold and mildew removal from canvas tops and enclosures
  • UV protection sprays and water repellents

7. Waterline and Hull Detailing
If the boat is out of water:
  • Removal of scum, algae, and waterline stains
  • Oxidation correction below the rub rail
  • Hull waxing or polishing

Signs It’s Time for Boat Detailing
You may need a full boat detail if you notice:
  • A faded finish on the hull or topside
  • Black streaks or brown waterline stains that aren't coming off with washing
  • Mildew growing in the canvas or non-skid
  • Grey teak decks
Early maintenance saves money. Waiting too long often requires a lot more work and compounding to restore your surfaces.

Why Professional Boat Cleaning Services Are Worth It
DIY boat cleaning has its place, but hiring professionals saves time, effort, and often produces better long-term results. A reputable marine detailing company will:
  • Use biodegradable, marine-safe products
  • Know which waxes and compounds suit your gel coat type
  • Protect delicate materials (like Isinglass, canvas, and varnished wood)
  • Follow proper methods for Awlgrip or ceramic-coated boats

Final Thoughts: Protect Your Investment with Regular Detailing
A full-service boat detailing package goes beyond a surface rinse—it protects your investment from UV damage, corrosion, oxidation, and mildew. Whether your boat is a weekend cruiser or a high-end yacht, detailing is essential preventative maintenance.
To get the best results, schedule regular professional boat detailing, especially before and after peak boating season. And remember, if your boat is already showing signs of fading or wear, the best time to act is now.
